Press
release from “Forensic International”
Kudankulam
Atomic Plant
“The scientists, especially
the atomic scientists of the country should come forward to alleviate the fear
psychosis among the local residents instead of leaving the matter to
politicians who would politicise any issue to gain political advantage” commented
the well known forensic scientist Dr P Chandra Sekharan, basically a physicist
who had his earlier training in safety aspects of radiation under the guidance
of India’s pioneer atomic scientist Homi J Bhaba.
He said “The Kudankulam
project is more than two decades old initiated by the former Prime Minister
Rajiv Gandhi in 1988.” “When protests
came during that time, the safety aspects Engineer Amulraj and myself (Dr
Chandra Sekharan) prepared a detailed report about Kudankulan project and
submitted to the then Chief Minister, who rightly called a press conference and
pacified the protesters.
There are no two opinions
that safety of the atomic plants is more important than their utility. Similarly
the displaced or affected people have to be rehabilitated and compensated. But
opposing the very project itself will certainly jeopardise the progress of the
country. It has become a routine now for politicians and the newly-grown outfit
called ‘activists’ to oppose any
progressive measure, be they roads, dams, harbours, airports, power plants and satellite
towns.
I wonder how these antagonists,
while opposing the projects, can enjoy the benefits out of such projects like
electricity, transportation and the other comforts.
